As I sat outside today in downtown Dallas and ate my lunch, I noticed a lady not too far from me. She was seated by herself with her head down. She had no lunch. Her only movement was to wipe her eyes every once in a while.

I felt the unmistakable urge to sit near her and see if she was ok.

As I asked her if she was alright, she shared with me that a very close friend had died just a few hours previously. She was clearly upset and held in her hands a photo of her late friend.

I asked her if I could pray with her, and she agreed. I asked God for comfort through the Savior of the world - Jesus Christ, and for the peace that passes all understanding. After I prayed I spoke about faith in Christ providing hope during the darkest of storms.

I share this not to sound good. There are many times I don't listen to that still small voice inside. I share this to encourage us all to take the time to listen to how God is directing us. How often does He want to use us, and yet we turn away. How often has He placed us at a particular juncture to share the hope of Jesus Christ with someone who so desperately needs to hear a word from Him?

I pray I would be more sensitive to that still, small prompting every day.

I pray you would be too.

Christian Cappuccino?

Anyone who knows me knows I love coffee....

I'd recently decided to spend some quiet time tucked away in a secluded corner of a local coffee house. Armed only with my Bible and my thoughts, I bought a large, steaming hot cappuccino and sat down in a chair I was convinced I may never get up from again....

Imagine my disappointment when mouthful after mouthful of my long-awaited coffee turned out to be nothing more than 'froth.' I kept waiting for the moment when I would get a taste of the 'real deal,' but all I ever encountered was 'fluff.'

Sitting in silence and contemplating my cup, I couldn't help but wonder whether the poor-excuse for a beverage in front of me was actually an all-too-familiar illustration of the Christian life? Are we really living out the life that Jesus Christ died for, or are we simply living like Christian 'froth?' If we were to be judged by our Savior today, would He find lives that had been given over completely to His purposes, or would he find lives that were simply 'fluff?'

I have been praying a lot for the Church. I have been praying that the Church of Jesus Christ would wake up and be renewed with a passion that is of God Himself - to know more of Him and live for Him.

I pray for us all.

I pray for revival.

I pray for faithfulness to His call on our lives.

"The man who says, 'I know Him,' but does not do what He commands is a liar, and the truth is not in Him."

The power of prayer

I've been spending a lot more time in prayer recently. I have felt a clear prompting from the Holy Spirit to set aside all distractions and pray.

I've begun to read passages in the Bible about prayer, and as I have done so, I've seen the need to be on my knees before I even consider getting on my feet to "do" something.

With an end to our seminary chapter looming closer and closer, I have become increasingly convicted that the power-horse of God's work through our family in full time ministry is prayer. Power in the pulpit stems from persistence in prayer. A response to the gospel is only a response to prayer. Lives changed in the pew, are lives prayed for in the pastor's study.

As I look out of my study window today and watch the (much needed!) rain fall on the ground, I am reminded of the ability of God's work to refresh the souls of all who come into contact with it. The power is not in the way I phrase my words though.....it's not how I dress or any gimmicks I try to use.....the power to refresh, feed and nurture the souls of my hearers.....rests in God alone!

Join me in prayer. Let's change those living in this world......by praying for God's work and will to be done through us!

"Create in us a pure heart oh God and renew a steadfast spirit within us!" Ps 51:10

"Why don't you do something about all of the people who are suffering?"

I think God looks at the world and asks us the same thing......

Shopping for a church or stopping at one....?

It's getting close to Labor Day, which means SALES SALES SALES! Shops all around us will be vying for our dollars and in return, we will be shopping around for the best bargain that suits our needs.

Unfortunately, that mentality all too often rolls over in the way we approach church. For many people, their view of church is "what will I get out of it?" or "what is going to best suit my needs?" Although I do agree that one particular style or type of church is better suited to different people, we must never forget that the church is the body of Jesus - a group of believers who have received salvation freely given - and to whom the most precious treasure ever imaginable has been given: the gospel able to save all who believe in Christ.

The church is not about us. It's all about God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The New Testament pattern for us is to belong to a church and to pour ourselves into it and serve God through it.

"The global purpose of Jesus was never intended to be accomplished by individuals. Be done with church hopping and shopping in a me-centered cultural milieu, and commit your life to a people who need you and whom you need."

Nathan has entered 5th grade and Olivia 4th!

If we stay in Texas, it is only 4 more years before Nathan gets his first driving permit......

Where is the time going? We're beginning to consider a future beyond DTS - the last 3.5 years have flown by!

What a joy and privilege it has been (and continues to be) to minister to, and alongside of, the people of Texas. God has blessed us so much in bringing us here. He has blessed us beyond imagination with such wonderful children. He has literally blessed us beyond words with such a great salvation!

Thank you our dear, heavenly, Father.

We are yours. Use us to help others see Jesus Christ more clearly we pray.

I am with you....always

Although we live in the midst of a hectic society in a growing city with busy schedules and timetables, I'm often aware of people who feel lonely......as though they're "going at it alone."

Many of us will face a season in life that causes us to wonder if we are the only ones facing a particular struggle or problem. In spite of an abundance of familiar faces around us, sometimes events can leave us feeling isolated and abandoned.

Let me comfort you that if you have faith in Jesus Christ, you are never alone. No matter the circumstances you face, you will never face life's trials by yourself. Remember the words of the angel Gabriel to Mary when he announced she would give birth to the Christ (Matt 1:23):

'You will be with child and they will call Him Immanuel - which means, "God with us" .'

Right at the end of the gospel of Matthew, Jesus Himself reiterated that very same sentiment. He said (Matt 28:20):

'I will be with you always, to the very end of the age.'

Take courage! Through the presence of the Holy Spirit, God is with those who have received Christ! You are not alone.

Test all things....

Being faithful to the truth of Scripture is not always as easy as we might think. In fact, sometimes it is extremely difficult to do.

Not only do we live in a society that is increasingly anti-Christian, but we are being constantly bombarded by different forms of media from every angle. Satan knows this of course, and he is the master at working in very subtle ways, casting doubt on the core principles upon which the Christian faith has been built. After all, if the devil is able to plant that seed of doubt, then sin is just around the next corner. Ask Eve......

Unfortunately this is an ever-increasing danger within Christian circles, especially when we are regularly exposed to books, music, films, comments and articles that look, sound and smell Christian, but in reality, are anything but!

Just because something or someone uses "Christian language," we should not automatically embrace their thoughts, principles or priorities.

This is not only an issue today, but has always been a problem for the Church. That is why the apostle John wrote:

"Test [all things] to see if they are from God....Many false prophets have gone out into this world."
1 John 4:1

Always test the things you encounter, whether in a book, on facebook, in a movie or in a Christian bookstore.....against the unchangeable truth of the Bible. God's word is truth (John 17:17). Anything that contradicts Scripture is not. There can be no truth in error.

God's primary calling....

These few weeks in August before school starts again have been wonderful!

We've been investing our energies in the primary ministry responsibility God has given us - our family!

Both Fiona and I are firm believers that God's first call on our lives are the children He has blessed us with. Spending time together - laughing and relaxing - praying and talking about God, His guidance and provision - has been a great time and incredible blessing.

Not only do we have the opportunity to help Nathan and Olivia along their own path of a maturing faith, but we have found that over and over again we learn from them as they share with us their own simple understanding of who God is.

For example, the children are often with me when we pay for groceries while shopping. I usually begin a conversation with the cashier and try to end up speaking about faith in Christ. Recently when I didn't, Nathan asked me afterward why I hadn't spoken to the man about Jesus. Not having a good answer, I shrugged my shoulders and said "I don't know, I just didn't." He thought about this for a while and then asked, "But if we don't, who will....?"

Will you?

No wonder that Jesus said:

"Anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it."

I fear that there are too many Christians today who treat their faith in the same way that a person would treat their prized jewels. All evidence of their salvation is "locked away" - shut up tight behind closed doors - not visible or even traceable by anyone.....except an elite few who "know the combination."

Why is Jesus Christ not more evident through the words and actions of His people?

Why is the gospel being stifled behind closed doors of "fortress church" in the West?

As I read the Bible, I can't escape how clearly we're told to openly share the gospel at every available opportunity.

Pray that God may open a door....so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ [Colossians 4:3]

Are we followers of Christ or not....?

How seriously do we take the teachings of Jesus? I fear there are some in the church today who are "self-ians" rather than "Christ-ians." They follow their own purposes rather than those of Jesus.

Consider just some of the teachings of Jesus:

He will save His people from their sins..and they will call Him 'God with us.' (Matt 1:21-23)

(and all God's people said AMEN!!)

Come to me all you who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest (Matt 11:28)

(and all God's people said AMEN!!)

Ask and it will be given to you..... (Matt7:7)

(and all God's people said AMEN!!)

If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me (Matt 16:24)

(and God's people said.....AMEN...?)

Go and make disciples of all nations.... (Matt 28:19)

(.....and God's people......????)

If the church of Jesus Christ fails to take heed and follow the teachings of Jesus.........

He who is not with me is against me (Matt 12:30)

If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching.....He who does not love me will not obey my teaching (John 14:23-24)

I can't add anything to that.

Back home from Africa! WOW!

I'm not sure where to start and where to end. There is so much to tell and so many different stories to share.

As I reflect and process all that I have seen and been a part of, I'll post on this blog or through facebook (if you're not already our 'friends' on facebook, please follow the link on the right), but right now, I want to say a big THANK YOU to our friends, supporters and prayer-warriors.

You were the tools God used to enable photos like the one above to be taken. Please have a good look at this photo. I had just shared the gospel with this group of people outside their home. They had not had anyone come to their home before and tell them about Jesus.

AGAIN.....no-one had previously gone to their home and told them about saving faith through Jesus Christ....

And yet through your love, gifts and support.......they heard about Christ and understood the need to follow Him.

Even as I write this post, I am overwhelmed with emotion that God sent me - through your support - to these people.....to share with them the gift of eternal life.

I have asked before......and now I ask again......is there anything in life more important than being part of introducing people to Jesus?

Homeward Bound!

Martin and the FBC team are now on their way home. They flew into Accra, the capitol of Ghana early this morning and will be flying out to the USA on Wednesday evening. Everyone is well and in good spirits. The team have ministered to orphans and widows, taught and preached to young men and women and taken the Gospel into remote Muslim villages. Praise the Lord for He has sustained them the whole time in emotionally, spiritually and physically difficult conditions.

Martin will be posting photos, stories and details of the mission as soon as he can - watch this space!

After all....that's what Jesus told us all to do - His final, parting words - His final mandate to the church - GO and make disciples of all nations....

Over the next 2 weeks I have the privilege of being part of a team from our church going to the other side of the globe to tell people about the grace of God through faith in Jesus Christ. How wonderful!

Thank you to everyone who has made this possible through support, prayer and encouragement.

I will try to either post updates on this blog from Africa, or Fiona will do with the information I get to her - so be sure to check back regularly.

At the moment, most of next week is filled with hut to hut evangelism in tribal communities - working alongside national Christians to try and plant a church in a Muslim area. We will also be running a Bible conference in the evenings, so our time will be filled and we need your prayers!

Christian mission is the only reason for our being here on earth. (Andrew Murray).

One man's mission is oversees. Another man's mission is the house next door.

In the words of Billy Graham.....I just want to be a lobbyist for God....

Praying for Ghana

With just 2 full days left here in the US until we depart for Ghana, my focus is on prayer: asking God what He wants us to accomplish for Him while we are there.

Will we meet resistance to the gospel? Will we reap a harvest? What conditions will we see?

One of the activities planned for us to take part in is a 3 day (evening) Bible conference. I'm scheduled to speak at each day of that conference as well as take part in leading small group sessions.

Please pray for wisdom to not only know what to say, but how to say it. To be able to communicate (through an interpreter) in a way that allows the Word of God to pierce hearts and bring men, women and children to Jesus Christ!

The difficult part of overseas mission

I'm often asked: "What is the most difficult part of going to the mission field in Africa?"

Well, for some, it will be seeing incredible poverty - children literally dying of starvation. For others, it will be not having home comforts and struggling to live in sparse conditions. For another it will be the worry of sickness or disease - what can we eat, touch, etc.....

For me, it's actually none of those.

For me, the hardest part is .........leaving Fiona, Nathan and Olivia behind.....

God has blessed us so much with an incredible family, and I thank Him all the time for the gift of a wonderful wife and children. We believe we are called as a family into ministry, and so when God leads one of us to go away for several weeks.....well, it really takes its toll on me personally. Will they be ok while I am gone? What if something needs attention at home? My caring instincts go into overdrive thinking about everything that could possibly go wrong while I am on the mission field.

I have learned however that trusting God includes trusting Him with every area of our lives: even (or perhaps - especially) with our family! When I'm in Africa, I can't be here to make sure everything is ticking over as it should, or responding to the needs of my family - so I have to entrust it all to One who is able to do so much more than I am!

I know who I have believed, and am convinced that He is able to guard what I have entrusted to Him....

We've just returned from a wonderful week away - tucked in the woods of south-western Missouri at a ministry retreat. It was a great time of 'recharging' and listening in the quiet of the setting to the Lord's direction and seeking His guidance for the future. What a blessing it was!

Not too far from our cabin was this huge cross - overlooking the valley - a place to sit and pray and contemplate the enormity of the cross and our salvation. It was a reminder of the grace of God in our lives.

Being in the middle of no-where for a week meant virtually no cell phone reception, no internet, no tv etc.... In fact, you might think of it as a 'media-fast!' Interestingly, the only place we ever got any reception at all on our cell phones was at the cross.....

Think about that for a moment.......the only place we ever 'got connected' was standing at the foot of the cross.....

Do I need to unpack that one anymore for you.....? ;)

Countdown to Ghana...

With less than one week to go until our church mission team departs
for Ghana, my prayer focus has been on preparing myself to be
available for whatever God wants to do through us.

I'll post a rough indication of our schedule soon, but most of our
time is going to be involved with either encouraging and equipping
small pockets of believers, or house to house (I should say 'hut to
hut') evangelism.

I've recently been asked to speak at a small Bible conference while we
are there. The conference will last for 3 nights, and I'll be the lead-
off speaker, before we split into smaller groups for Bible study.
Please pray that I will know what to say, and also that I will simply
be the vessel through which God will equip and guide those who attend.
At the moment we've been told that people from all over the Northern
Region are making arrangements to be there - what a wonderful
opportunity for the Lord!

Keep checking back, because this blog will be my main source of
updating (cell phone permitting!)

Well, Nathan's second season of little league baseball came to an end last night.....with Nathan being awarded the gameball for his performance in outfield and consistently getting on base in the final 4 games! It was a 4 run season for Nathan, which is fantastic!

Anxious to hear about Jesus

I've recently had an e-mail from one of the Christian pastors in Ghana that we will be working with this summer. He spoke alot about how much they were praying for our team and the work that he is convinced the Lord has planned for us this summer.

At the end of his e-mail, he signed off as follows:

We are so anxious for you to come and help us tell about Jesus!

I can't stop thinking about that line. Am I that anxious to share my faith? Are you?

Have we become too laid back in our understanding about what Christ really wants the church to do? I am so burdened that the church in the West is not fulfilling the one command that Jesus left it with:

Go and make disciples of all nations. (Matt 28:18-20)

To make a disciple......you've first of all got to tell someone about Christ! We're all about discipleship, but shouldn't we be just as anxious about preaching the gospel?

Ghana mission 2010 - update

I (Martin) leave in just under 3 weeks for Ghana, Africa with a mission team from our church: First Baptist Rockwall. It seems to be coming up very quickly, and I wanted to give an indication of some of the things I'll be involved in with our mission team while we are there.

We will be ministering in the northern part of the country, known as the 'Northern Region.' It is an area of significant poverty and spiritual darkness. The people we will be working among are a little-known tribal group called the Dagomba people.

While there, our team will:
- Engage in village evangelism in several different villages. This will involve going from hut to hut and telling the villagers (through a translator) about God's love for them through Jesus Christ.
- Hold a Bible conference in the evenings for Christians in the area who need Biblical training and instruction.
- Visit several different types of outreach ministries, including a local 'witch camp' (a commune of women who have been ex-communicated by their own friends and family for a variety of reasons)
- Provide support to orphan homes in the area.

In addition to the above, there will be some general work of encouraging the small churches that already exist in the area.

I would ask for your prayers. The area is around 99% muslim, and many people do not welcome a Christian presence. Please also ask the Lord to help me as I prepare to preach at a church while we are there, as well as speak at the Bible conference and help with the teaching. Please pray for all of our team: for health and safety of course, but also that God would use us to reveal Himself to those who are currently perishing without Christ.

I'll be regularly updating this blog while I'm on the mission field through text updates - so don't expect any fancy images - it will be the bare bones of info as and when we get any kind of cell phone service!

Moving Forward

Relying on God

I was reading Leviticus 2 this morning, and pondering why God was so emphatic that the Israelites were not to include any element of yeast in their offerings to Him.

When God led them out of Egyptian slavery, He instructed them to make bread, but to leave the yeast out - in other words, they would be led out of their trouble so quickly, there would not even be time for the dough to rise!

In Leviticus, the various offerings they were commanded to do each contained elements that helped to remind the Israelites how dependent they were on God. Leaving yeast out of the grain offering was a reminder of the exodus from Egypt and God's faithfulness to them in the past, and how reliant they were to be on Him for their present and for their future. In other words, the yeast was a reminder of the past; leaving it out was symbolic that they were to rely on God, rather than self.

Today, we too ought to leave the 'yeast' out of our worship of God.

Remember His faithfulness to you in the past. As you consider your present circumstances and future plans, don't rely on the past - or self - or what you feel you have been able 'to do.' Rely purely on the faithfulness of God, and He will do it!

Privileged to suffer..?

Consider this verse.

It has been granted to you on behalf of Christ, not only to believe on Him, but also to suffer for Him.

I've heard a lot said about the first part of that verse.....that we have been given the ability to believe in Jesus Christ.....but have you ever heard anyone rejoicing about the second part of the verse....that we have been given the ability to suffer for Jesus?

The Greek literally reads....you have been freely granted the privilege of suffering for Christ....

The privilege of suffering...?

I would say most of us do not view suffering as a privilege.

Understand that verse from this perspective: God has freely given to us salvation. As a part of that free gift, He has also given us the privilege of being Christ's people in this world, and that means we will suffer for His sake...just as He suffered for ours. We live in a world that is openly hostile to the gospel. One promise of the Christian faith is that we will face trouble, persecution and strife.

However, as we journey through those times, we have the assurance that we are not alone, and ultimately we have the confidence that the work God began in us....He will complete (Phil 1:6).

Yes.......we have been given the "privilege" of suffering in the name of our Savior. The greater privilege however is that we are not alone - never......ever....... and we have the strength of Jesus Christ to accomplish every task He sets before us (Phil 4:13).

You will find that people will often watch to see how you react to certain circumstances and daily events. Will you 'blow up' like everyone else? Will your attitude simply blend in with the rest of culture, or is there something about you and the way you live that reflects God and the faith you have in Christ?

The Apostle Peter clearly knew about this. This is how he put it:

"Live such good lives among the pagans (non-Christians) that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day He visits us."
1 Peter 2:12

Expect to be scrutinized by non-Christians. Expect to live 'under the microscope.' Many will not understand why you live the way you do, or why you make the decisions you do. Through it all however, your faith in Jesus Christ must be like a beacon in darkness. After all, we are called to be the light of the world!

God sees the bigger picture

Having just finished reading Josh Hamilton's autobiography (highly recommended!), I'm now reading Tony Dungy's (oh, the joys of being able to chose my own reading list!). Tony Dungy was the Superbowl winning head coach of the Colts, and, like Josh Hamilton, is a great Christian man.

I've just finished reading a chapter that described the time during which he was waiting for God to open the door to a head coaching position. Several times he felt he was more than qualified for a position, but was seemingly overlooked and became very frustrated. Finally, a position was offered to him that he never thought possible, and he was launched into one of the most coveted positions in the NFL, through which God really used him and his gifts as a football coach.

He looked back on that time of frustration and wrote:

I learned a valuable lesson. God's plans don't always follow human logic. I was finally a head coach, but it happened in a setting and through a process that had me believe I had no chance. We often can't see what God is doing in our lives, but God sees the whole picture and His plan for us clearly.

Wow. Does that speak to anyone else....?

A clearing in the woods...

Did you know that Philippi was a major trade route of the 1st century, famous for logging and wood?

Paul clearly knew this when he wrote to the church at Philippi, because he used logging terms that would have resonated with his readers.

In Philippians 1:12 he wrote (speaking of his first imprisonment in Rome - from where he wrote the letter):

Now I want you to know, brothers, that what has happened to me has really served to advance the gospel.

The word "advance" was often used by the Greeks to describe the clearing of wood in a forest to enable progress to continue. In other words, Paul's circumstances in life made a way clear for the gospel. The word literally means to progress or to move forward to an improved state.

Paul used the same word again in 1:25 when he said it was better for him to remain alive than to die at that time, because it would help the Church to progress in the faith.

QUESTION: Are we allowing our circumstances to further the gospel and the faith of others?

QUESTION: As we encounter "the forest" of trials and circumstances, do we simply stop - perplexed and overwhelmed.....or do we press ahead, making a clearing through those circumstances that will reveal Jesus Christ and build up the faith of others?

QUESTION: Are we clearing the way for others to see Jesus Christ?

Devotional thoughts from Philippians

I've begun my summer break by starting to read through Paul's letter to the Philippians in Greek - translating it from its original language into English. Yes.....I know that's already been done for me by the Bible translators, but I wanted to sharpen my Greek skills, and I also want to spend time examining Paul's word choice, rather than simply relying on editorial decisions made by translation teams (who are not always correct!)

Anyway, I'm really enjoying it, and I wanted to share a few thoughts from Philippians 1:9-10. It reads (NET Bible translation):

And I pray this, that your love may abound even more and more in knowledge and every kind of insight, so that you can decide what is best, and thus be sincere and blameless for the day of Christ.

Paul's prayer was that the Christians in Philippi would grow in their knowledge and love of Jesus Christ, SO THAT they could "decide what is best."

The Greek for that phrase is actually one word which means ...making a critical examination of something....or....to draw a conclusion after having tested something. The focus is that after you have carried out an essential process of examining something on the facts, the result should be that you are able to decide what is best....and consequently "be sincere and blameless" for the day Jesus returns.

We live in a world where we are much too quick to accept what our culture decides is 'ok.' As Christians, we must be evaluating what we see, hear and interact with, only accepting it once we have determined with absolute certainty that it will contribute towards making us blameless before our Savior. If something fails to meet that level.....then we have no business being involved in it.

Thought for the day: Are we carrying out a critical examination / process of evaluating the things in our lives to make sure they contribute to the overall goal of presenting us pure in our faith?

The temple of God

I've just finished reading through the book of Exodus again. We tend to think that it's a book about how Moses brought the Israelites out of Egypt, and while that is indeed an important part of the book, much more attention and detail is actually given to worship: how the Israelites were to approach God, and where they were to worship Him (in the Tabernacle).

With absolute precision, God gave His people instructions as to how the Tabernacle was to be made. The place where they were to worship Him was clearly very important to God. No detail was overlooked, and the time and skill used is simply breath-taking and awe-inspiring!

Today, we don't need a Tabernacle or temple to worship God. The body of every Christian is the temple through which God is worshiped (1 Cor 6:19-20).

If worship is so vital to what God demands of His people, and if God is so concerned with the state of the 'temple' through which He is worshiped.......what are you doing to present your body as acceptable before the Lord, and what needs to be changed in the way you treat it to ensure it is holy to Him?

Think about it for a moment.... Camouflage spray paint.......? Am I the only one who sees how ridiculous that sounds? It's like buying tartan spray paint, or air for your air conditioner..... HOW DOES IT WORK?

Ah well, at least there are some things in life that are simple, straight forward and easy to understand......

I was putting fuel in my car the other day, when a lady pulled up next to me and began to fuel her truck. It caught my attention, because the entire time, she stood there smoking her cigarette....right next to the HUGE "Do not smoke" sign....!

When I politely pointed this out to her, I received an outburst through a mouth of missing teeth and a cloud of smoke, so I quickly finished fueling and drove away.......looking in the rear view mirror and waiting for the imminent fire ball....

Anyway, it got me thinking......how many people ignore blatant warning signs? People do all the time:

- when was the last time you saw anyone driving at 30mph in a 30 zone?
- do you ever analyze all the side-affects before taking medicine or vitamins?
- when was the last time you walked all the way around your vehicle, checked each tire pressure, oil level and brake lights before starting the ignition? (check your car instruction manual - it's in there under 'daily checks!')

My point is this....people ignore vital warning signs every day - just like my smoking lady encounter.

Most urgently however, people everyday are ignoring the warning signs presented to them each time we share the gospel: that life apart from faith in Jesus Christ will result in eternal punishment in hell....

.....because we're telling them, arn't we...!

......arn't we....?

Holy Holy Holy

Right in the midst of finals I have the awesome privilege of preaching at our church this Sunday on the holiness of God!

I've felt the need to for a while.....I just didn't envisage it happening during my busiest time of the semester! I've spent many long hours asking God to help me understand what holiness means and how I can even attempt to accurately teach about this most central characteristic of who He is.

Did you know that no-where else in the Bible is one characteristic of God's nature repeated in quick succession, other than holiness, where it is stressed three times at once - in 2 separate places in the Old and New Testaments (Revelation 4 and Isaiah 6). That alone means we need to stand up and take notice of what God's holiness means.

I've posted the following song before, but here it is for you to listen to again. This is one of the most theologically sound contemporary hymns I had heard lately. It will be a part of our service on Sunday.

...it appears that people are speaking to you in binary code.

...antacid tablets become your sole source of nutrition.

Have you ever made a decision, only to look back afterward with hindsight and wonder if it was actually the right thing to have done?

I remember very clearly the reaction of some people in the UK when we first announced that we were leaving our jobs, home and family and following God's call by moving half way around the world. To put it bluntly, they thought we had lost our minds......after all, why on earth would anyone give up secure and lucrative careers to go into ministry? They thought we were crazy....

Interesting, some people still think the same thing....

I was speaking with someone in the UK this past week, and they'd overheard a conversation between someone I used to work with that went something like this:

"Oh yeah, I knew Martin. He was a good lawyer with a promising legal career ahead of him. Shame he got involved in that God lot....."

We see things now only through earthly eyes. We don't see as God sees.....especially those who are without Christ in their lives.

Paul wrote, "The message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved, it is the power of God." (1 Cor 1:18)

Don't worry if those who love the world fail to understand the decisions you make because of your love for Jesus Christ. Nothing on earth will ever reward you for your service, the reward will come when you meet Christ face to face.

I look forward to the day when everything we ever gave up in this life will fade away into insignificance, and we will obtain a reward that can neither perish, spoil or fade!

For most people reading this blog (apart from some seminary 'nuts' like myself), this image will be completely 'Greek' to you.....!

That's because it is......Greek that is! You could probably stare at it all day long and still be none-the-wiser, wondering what on earth it means, until someone came along and interpreted it for you.

You know, that's so often what our day to day lives are like as well.

We often find ourselves 'staring' at the events and circumstances that happen to us, wondering what it all means, and struggling to understand what to make of it all. We labor on, as though wading through thick glue, trying to 'interpret' what God is doing and wondering how to respond.

And then.....at just the right time.....God will help us to understand how He is working, and He'll help us to see how He wants us to respond. We often don't understand what God is doing at the time.....and yet, He's always at work, usually in ways that is so much greater than we could have imagined or asked for!

We must depend on Him daily for the wisdom to be able to 'interpret' what He's doing: asking for His guidance to know how to respond to the challenges and opportunities that come our way. Sometimes it will be as clear as glass......other times, it will all seem like 'Greek!'

God knows how every piece of our lives fits together, after all, He designed it even before time itself! Our part today is to trust and follow Him. He'll reveal it all to us when the time is right.....and usually it will be so much more than we could have imagined possible - for His glory!

When God provides!

This past week has been an incredible roller coaster of watching God at work....up and close!

As I type this post, the cost to send me to Ghana this summer has been met!

We are completely overwhelmed by the incredible way God has provided this money - we are humbled and in awe of such a generous outpouring from the body of Christ.....especially during the last 6 days.

What God orders......God pays for.

.....and BOY have we seen how quickly He can act! Words literally fail me (and that's saying a lot....!)

Thank you God for your ongoing faithfulness to us. Thank you for moving the hearts of your people to give so that those on the other side of the world can hear the truth of salvation through Jesus Christ!

At just the right (God-designed) time....

April 16th has been a day looming fast in our minds! It was the day when we needed to have the second installment of Ghana funds in our mission account: $1600. We've been praying for some time, and it felt as though many of the doors we were gently knocking on were not being opened....

We were praying.....and praying.....and waiting.....and waiting.....

Last weekend we received a large donation from some wonderful friends that put us well on the way to hitting that target (thank you!). During the week we had other donations made, but at the end of yesterday (April 16th), we were still below what we needed, yet we knew somehow God would provide the funds.

I woke up this morning, sat at my desk and sipped hot coffee....talking with the Lord and wondering how all of this was going to work.....

And then just after I finished my 'conversation with God,' I received word from the UK that yesterday (April 16th) another large gift was made towards Ghana.......that put us over the target amount needed! RIGHT ON TIME!

Phew.....talk about cutting it close......but then.....I guess God really does know what He is doing!

We are so overwhelmed by the generous giving of God's people, and the incredible way God works in our lives. I really feel as though we're 'living on the edge of faith' right now.....but then, I think that's just where God wants us to be....!

Thank you to everyone who is walking this journey with us right now. You are our spiritual support network, and God has brought you into our lives so that we might all grow closer to Him, and so that others might hear that Jesus Christ offers the free gift of salvation!

Faithful friends

We are very blessed to have such a faithful group of friends!

Over the past weeks, we have been encouraged by so many people, in so many ways. There are countless people working 'behind the scenes' demonstrating God's love for us in a number of ways: it is truly amazing, and also incredibly humbling.

Thank you Lord for bringing such loving, kind, compassionate people around us. Thank you for providing us with such attentive friends. Thank you for giving them a heart to see your work through us. We pray that you would refresh and encourage them, just as they refresh and encourage us. We pray that you would meet their needs, just as you are using them to meet ours. You are a truly awesome God, and it is an ongoing privilege to be called to serve you and your church.

Thank you to our friends. You know who you are..... You are invaluable in this ministry. You are tools of God.

devotional thoughts

As is my early morning habit, I sat at my desk before sunrise this morning with my devotional study guide, my Bible and a hot cup of coffee. I opened the devotion to today's date, and found a reference to Acts 17:26-27.

My heart sank a little..... you see, I'm currently teaching through the book of Acts in the weekly Bible study at our church, and this past weekend I taught Acts 17! I'd been in that chapter all week, and I thought I'd already 'wrung it dry' of spiritual benefit. So....you'll forgive me for saying.....my heart sank a little.

As I opened my Bible and began to read, the Holy Spirit impressed something on me that I had failed to see in the text all week....even as I taught it.....and it was like being hit between the eyes with a baseball!

"(God) determined the times set for (His people) and the exact places where they would live. He did this so that men would seek Him and perhaps reach out for Him and find Him."

Fiona and I are spending more and more time trying to listen to the Lord as we get closer towards finishing DTS. We are looking for that time when God will reveal our future ministry to us. We are wondering the exact place where we'll end up living.....and yet God prepared all of this before time itself!

This morning's reading was a wonderful reminder that at just the right time, God will reveal to us the place He has (and is right now) preparing for us to live and minister.....so that people would seek Him and reach out for Him.

God wants to use us as tools through whom people will seek Him. And He wants to do the same with you.

He's in control. He simply calls us to follow.

a church plant

The team leader of our African mission to Ghana this summer (Cheryl Read) recently confirmed that we have been given permission to begin a church in a village (similar to the one above) called Zugu! This is incredible news, and means that - working alongside local Ghanaian Christians - we will be able to plant the first Christian presence in that particular area!

The church plant is so vitally important, because the village of Zugu is virtually 99% muslim, and is home to the regional chief who exercises control over a large number of villages in that area. Permission to go into his village and conduct 1 on 1 evangelism and to start Christian worship is amazing! God has truly gone before us and softened hearts and opened doors.....

.....now our task is simply 'to go' and tell them the good news about Jesus Christ!

Can you possibly think of anything more rewarding?

Can you imagine anything more fulfilling?

Please pray for God to soften the hearts of the people of Zugu to receive the gospel, and in turn to receive Jesus Christ as Lord! Please pray for the chief of Zugu himself to trust in Christ for his salvation.

We had a wonderful evening last night attending a Chris Tomlin concert here in Dallas! We were given 4 free tickets by Dallas Seminary, and went together as a family.

It was great! We thank God that we are able to praise Him through song and join together with thousands of others worshiping Him so freely. What a mighty God we serve!

Mission Ghana 2010

This is an image of a city slum called Agbogbloshie, which is part of the capital city of Accra in Ghana. I can honestly say I have never seen living conditions like these in all of my travels. In fact, I use the term 'living conditions' hesitantly, because how anyone can live here is beyond any form of comprehension.

There are no underground sewers (you're looking at the only type of sewer in the picture above). There is very little electricity (and this is near the heart of the capital of Ghana!), very little law and order and poverty beyond our grasp. It smells, you have to watch every step you take, you need to avoid stopping to talk to people for any length of time, you must stay in a group and keep your wits and eyes about you at all times.....

.....and yet God loves these people! They (just like us) are made in the image of God.

God wants them to hear the good news of faith in Jesus just as much as He wants us to. His love for them is nothing less than His love for you.......and this summer it will be my privilege to return to places like Agbobloshie - to tell people about Jesus.

Please pray for our team as we continue to prepare to leave.

Please pray for my own fundraising (I need $1000 in just over one week!!!)

Please pray for open hearts as we go and share the hope of Christ.

Tiger Woods

This image of Tiger Woods is one of the 'most googled' images online right now. It gets more 'hits' per day than any other image of him. Perhaps that's why you're reading this blog right now!?

Let's face it, Tiger's by far one of (if not 'the') best golfer in the world. Yet, in spite of all of his worldly success, fame and wealth, he has not acquired the only thing that really matters.

Jesus Christ said, "I am the way, the truth and the life. No-one comes to the Father, except through me." That means faith in Jesus is the only way to God. Unless a person has received Jesus as their Savior, they will not go to heaven when they die, they will only go to hell.

What about you? If you were to die today, where would you go? To heaven, or to hell? The Bible clearly tells us that:

- everybody has rebelled against God - that is called sin.

- the result of every person's sin is judgment - God judging you for your actions.

- being judged by God will result in an eternity in hell (hell is real......don't let the devil fool you that it isn't)

- When Jesus died on the cross, he took the punishment for everyone who would believe in Him as their Savior

- the only way to heaven is to ask God to forgive us, and to believe that Jesus died for our sins and was raised from the dead. If you confess that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead.....you will be saved!

If I am wrong, you can click away now and never think about this again......BUT if what I have said is true.....then clicking away now has ETERNAL IMPLICATIONS.....think about that....

The day of your salvation is today.

This is your prayer to God:

'Dear Lord, I am sorry for sinning against you. Please forgive me. I want to start my life all over again. I believe that Jesus died for my sins and was raised from the dead. I want to trust Him as my Savior.'

Praise God! You are a new creation in Christ.

Becoming all things.....to save some

The Apostle Paul faced the same task we face today: how to communicate an unchanging truth (the gospel) in a changing culture (the world we live in).

Paul understood that the message of salvation through Christ alone had to be communicated in a way in which those around him were able to understand. The gospel WAS (and still is) relevant.......the human method of communicating it had to adapt to the audience so that they would understand it within their own context.

That's why he wrote:

"I have become all things to all men so that by all possible means I might save some. I do this for the sake of the gospel, that I may share in its blessings."

1 Corinthians 9:22-23

Notice that PAUL became all things......not the gospel....

What are we doing to communicate the life changing truth of faith in Jesus to today's audience?

If we think people will simply flood into our churches to hear a gospel presentation on a Sunday.....then we need to think again.

Don't get me wrong......the church is an absolute, Scriptural necessity (after all, we've given our lives to being a part of it in ministry!), but as the body of Christ, WE need to be out in our world, engaging people and showing them who Christ is.....with the goal of bringing them into the body that is the church.

So how are you doing that this week.....?

In what way, are you becoming all things to the people God has placed in front of you this week....for the sake of the gospel?

illogical logic....

As a lawyer, I think logically. It's who I am. Whenever I used to prepare to go to Court, I would always prepare my case logically - following an argument through from the beginning of the problem to the solution.

Let's follow a logical argument for a moment.....

1. There is a problem: every person is born in a sinful state and is therefore living in rebellion to God (Romans 3:23).

2. As a result, every person will face God's judgment; which is eternity in hell. (Romans 6:23)

3. However, in spite of our sin and rebellion, God (in His incredible love) has open the possibility for us to be forgiven through faith in Jesus Christ (the solution). This means we will receive His mercy, not judgment for our sins (John 3:16).

4. To receive God's forgiveness, a person must believe in Jesus Christ (the application) (Romans 10:9 / Acts 16:31)

5. To believe in Jesus however, a person must first hear about Jesus (Romans 10:14a).

6. To hear about Jesus, someone must tell him or her (Romans 10:14b).

........and yet the greatest problem in our churches today is that we're not telling people about Jesus.

We're not telling people they need to be saved.....??!!

We're not clearly articulating the ONLY hope for all eternity??

Am I the only one who sees a problem with this.....???

The world is changing....are we?

Whether you like change or not.....the world all around you is changing at a lightning FAST pace. The world of 2010 is significantly different from the world of 2009.

Every Christian - and every church - has a duty before the Lord to look at how we can use what God has given us to reach out to the world He has placed us in. The changes going on all around us have not taken God by surprise, you know, and He has given us EXACTLY what we need to reach this world today.

Are we?

How are we doing that?

What are we doing to communicate the timeless truth of Jesus Christ to a generation that is bound up in an ever changing perception of time? I'll be posting more on this in coming weeks, but right now I want you to watch the following video. I posted one similar to this about 6 months ago.....but that one's now out of date....

This video is not a Christian video. But it is a picture of our society today. Ask yourself the questions that appear at the end from a 'church' perspective.

A week in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Georgia....

We've just returned from a wonderful week in a very rural location in
the beautiful Blue Ridge mountains of Northern Georgia. It was
breathtaking scenery coupled with great weather....just what we needed
to take some 'time out' as a family.
There was no telephone, Internet or tv. Fiona and I thought this was
great, but Nathan and Olivia didn't know what to do with themselves.
It's incredible how dependant we quickly find ourselves to the
'things' around us! It was a timely reminder that our dependancy must
be on God alone, and nothing of this world, because He alone is

We arrived home safe and well, only to find our phone, Internet and tv
had been accidentally cut off by our supplier! Ok....a week in the
Gerogia mountains is one thing, but back in 'reality,' we need things
for our practical daily lives...
...no.....again, it was a reminder that even in the 'mundane' of day
to day, God is the only One we can depend on!

Last night was the opening ceremony for the international World Evangelism Conference at Dallas Seminary. The evening began with a flag procession into the main chapel at DTS, and we were asked to carry the Union Jack for the UK. I asked Nathan and Olivia if they would like to do it, and they were thrilled to!

The following photo is the two of them with 'Jack just before we began our march for Queen and country!

What I won't tell you, is that when I asked them to go and collect 'our' flag, they went straight to pick up the Stars and Stripes.....

Spectator only?

I've been studying forms of Christian worship traditions this semester at DTS, and the more I examine what we do and how we do it, the more I feel 'we' (that is, the modern church), are subconsciously encouraging 'spectator worship.' What I mean is this: it is so easy for the average person to attend most Sunday church services and not do anything at all. We've created an ability to 'sit and watch,' just like you would attend the movie theaters.

As I study Scripture, I find that Christianity is anything but passive - it is a living, passionate, fully engaged way of life that demands we are wholly absorbed in who Christ is and how we are able to worship Him by complete participation in His church.

So....next time you're sitting in your own church, ask yourself......am I guilty of practizing a 'spectator religion,' or am I really engaged with the great I AM?

Meet chief Zugu

I'd like to ask you to pray for the man in white, sitting in the center of this photo. He's the regional chief who oversees many of the rural villages in The Northern Region of Ghana in which our mission team will be working this summer. He is based in a village called Zugu (hence, I'll simply call him 'chief Zugu').

We need his permission to enter the villages and minister to the people there. To put it bluntly, if chief Zugu gives us his permission, we have freedom to enter the villages within his control and share the gospel and minister to the people living there. If he declines.....the door is closed and the mission cannot proceed.

One of the main goals this summer is actually to plant the first Christian church in his own village (Zugu). At the moment there is no Christian witness there (in the photo above, he is sitting in front of a mosque.....!)

Will you join us in prayer that God would prompt the heart of chief Zugu to grant permission for our team to enter Zugu and the surrounding villages? Will you ask God to melt chief Zugu's own heart, and open the door for him to receive Jesus Christ as Lord!

How God provides

I was talking with God last night about the money still needed for Ghana. I confessed to Him that I was completely dependent on Him to raise the funds necessary for me to take part in this summer's mission trip to Ghana. I concluded that I was convinced He wants me to go to Africa and tell people about Jesus Christ, and so I went to sleep, trusting in God's provision.

This morning in Church I was handed a check towards my Ghana expenses by one of our church members! How amazing! It was a real and tangible reminder that God has all of this in hand. He wants me to prepare myself to share the gospel on the other side of the world....and to leave the 'details' to Him!

How great is our God!

God will provide. It's really exciting to watch Him open the door for the good news of saving faith to be heard by a long-forgotten group of people on the other side of the world.....

amp-ed up for Christ!

Have you ever tried an energy drink? It's amazing how they really do what they're supposed to do!

Let me tell you what happened in our household yesterday. Nathan came home from school with a project to produce a report on a famous personality. Because he is a huge NASCAR fan, he decided to write about Dale Earnhardt Jnr. Part of the report required him to gather together household items that reflect the person being written about. It just so happens that one of Dale Jnr's major sponsors is AMP energy......so we decided to buy an AMP energy drink..

.....now of course.....he couldn't use a full can......so he decided to drink it.......

BOY....!!!!!!

He was pinging off the ceiling for ages afterward! He was racing around the house, speaking at twice his normal speed.......he was on FIRE.....!!!! Everything he spoke about was with this immense passion......it was so funny to watch.

But then I got to thinking.......as Christians, shouldn't we be like that in telling others about Jesus Christ? If Jesus really is the only way to God.....the only way to forgiveness......the only way to heaven.....then shouldn't we also have an all consuming passion to be telling people about Him and about the reality of rejecting Him?

If not......what kind of people are we? If not......how can we profess to love people?

Hey - here's my advice......get AMP-ed up for Christ!

a glimpse of grace.....

So often I feel we don't understand what 'grace' is.

We seem to be constantly trying to earn God's favor.....constantly trying to 'do' and 'not do' as we seek God's approval. And then we feel guilt and shame because we fail to live up to the expectations we are told we must achieve.

Don't misunderstand me.....as Christians we need to be seeking to be more and more like God everyday - offering ourselves as 'living sacrifices' to the God of all eternity (Romans 12:1-2).

BUT....we mustn't tie ourselves up in the knots of legalism and 'must do.'

You know what I mean....we 'must do' this or we 'must do' that....lest we disappoint God.

Hey....let me just tell you now....YOU DISAPPOINT GOD - EVERYDAY!! ....and so do I.

How amazing then, that by His grace - free, unearned and undeserved grace - are we saved. Not by anything you could do......but by everything that Christ did for you.

asking God to provide

As Fiona and I have felt God's leading into the African mission field the past 2 years, we've been completely reliant on His provision for the money to fund it, because raising around $3,500 is completely beyond most seminary student's personal resources.....!

God has shown His incredible faithfulness on both occasions, providing more than enough necessary for us to travel half way around the world and into the most remote tribal settings.....all to enable a forgotten and impoverished people to hear the gospel message. Praise God!

In 7 days time my completed mission application must be submitted, together with an initial deposit of $350.00 required to book the flight. Will you join me in asking God to provide that sum - as well as the remaining balance required - so that I might have the privilege of joining a team and taking the message of salvation through Jesus Christ to the ends of the world.....!

What a mighty God we serve!

This is one of my favorite all time images. It draws me right in every time I see it.

It is one of the greatest reminders to me of God's protection for His people as we journey through this life.

Psalm 46 tell us:

Launching Ghana Mission 2010

We have been praying for some time now about a return to Ghana this summer. As many of you know, I (Martin) went in the summer of 2008, and Fiona went in 2009. This coming July 2010, I will be joining a team from our church and going back to the Northern region of Ghana. The team will be led by Cheryl and Chris Read who have extensive experience working in this part of Africa.

We will be working along side local Christians among the Dagomba people in the villages around Tamale in the North of the country. One of our main goals is to help plant a church in an area that doesn't have a Christian witness at the moment.

Over the coming weeks and months I'll be posting frequently about the mission and planned activities, and asking for your prayer, and inviting anyone who feels led of the Lord to contribute towards the costs involved for me to take part. The total amount of funds I need to raise is $3,500.00.

Let's begin asking God to spiritually break open the ground in anticipation for our team working for His glory.

To do list

OK......so if you follow our blog, you'll have noticed nothing but silence for over a week....

I know, I know......there's been no activity and no new posts! Phew.....it's just been SO BUSY! We can really tell seminary, church and school are all back in full swing, that's for sure!

Anyway, the result is that our 'to do' lists are growing by the minute. We keep looking at them, knowing the list of things we want 'to do' is growing by the day. We're sure you have a 'to do' list of your own.

If you're like us, then sometimes (perhaps most times) your prayer life will sound like a spiritual 'to do' list for God. You present Him a list of things 'to do' in your life, expecting to see each one ticked off as it is dealt with.

The trouble is, the picture of prayer we continually see in the Bible is so much more than that. Sure....God can answer any prayer - He can 'do' anything you need.......but why don't we take a fresh look at some of the wonderful examples in Scripture we have for prayer, and put these at the top of our prayer 'to do' list.....

"Praise and glory and wisdom and thanks and honor and power and strength be to our God for ever and ever. Amen!"

What does God look like?

The Greek language is really fascinating, you know. As we study the Bible in its original languages, we find so much depth to the text that our English translations simply don't convey to us. The problem is not so much with our translations, as it is with our language. There just aren't enough English words to draw a parallel to the Greek or Hebrew.

Anyway, I was reading John 1, and I noticed John 1:18 in particular:

"No one has ever seen God, but God the One and Only, who is at the Father's side, has made him known."

The phrase 'has made him known' is just one Greek word that means to expound in detail..... The actual Greek word itself is one that you may have heard before when discussing how to interpret the Bible: it is the word....exegesis..

In other words, Jesus has exegeted (made known) God to us. In Jesus we have the best description of the character of God we will find this side of heaven.....it is because of Christ that we can know, experience and begin to understand God the Father.

Do you know Him through Christ?

I spent this weekend attending a Christian counseling course at seminary on how to deal with marital conflict (no.....we're not having any problems......this course is not only designed to help couples in ministry, but also to help us know how to prevent and deal with it from a pastoral perspective.....!)

Anyway, they began today with the following video clip from Tim Hawkins, a Christian comedian.

Let's face it......we live in a consumer driven culture. Today, more than ever before, the consumer has power, calls the shots and expects to be served, entertained and pleased at every turn.

But that's not at all the picture of Christ in the Bible, nor who He expects those who follow Him to be. Remember, Jesus came to serve, not to be served (Matthew 20:28).

A good friend showed me the following video recently, which I thought was very funny.......but then it got me thinking that actually, if we're not careful.......it may be a little too close to the truth for comfort.

Life in seminary requires a LOT of reading. It seems with every new semester there comes a new mountain of required reading. For example, Martin's book count for this Spring semester already numbers 17 books, and is still growing!

The result is that we tend to guard very closely what we read for pleasure, but we wanted to share with you some of the things we are reading and enjoying at the moment.

Fiona: We've become big Texas Rangers baseball fans. I'm currently reading a wonderful autobiography from one of their star players: Josh Hamilton. Josh is a strong Christian, but has a very tumultuous past, including drug and alcohol addition. This book tells that story and how he only found hope through Jesus Christ. I would highly recommend it!

Martin: I've been searching for how to deepen my relationship with God and how to pray and listen to the Lord. A friend recently recommended this book. It helps us understand ways in which we can try to actually listen to God and allow Him to work through us as we hear His voice. One to read!

Fiona: I am once again leading a women's Bible study through seminary. This semester we are going to work through this book, and although I've only just begun looking through this, I know it is going to be a wonderful insight into how God can use us to counsel and reach out to others in the ministry. This is ought to be required reading for any woman who has a heart for helping other women grow in their walk with the Lord.

Martin: I can't say enough about this book, other than, if you are the father of a daughter of ANY age, you need to read it! It is a great discussion of how to relate to, understand and grow alongside your daughter.....within the context of a Christian relationship and knowing God. Excellent!

For every Christian: Every Christian ought to be deepening their relationship with Christ through daily Bible reading and regular Bible study. How often though have you read a text and not been quite sure what it meant, or wanted to delve a little deeper, yet not had the resources to? Well, here is a two volume commentary on the whole Bible we would recommend. It is detailed enough to answer most questions, yet remains very readable and can be understood. If you have a Bible at home......this should be right there next to it!

Frozen ground but not a frozen spirit

It seems everyone has been experiencing cold weather.....and Texas has not escaped either!

We went to the movies with the children this morning and they were thrilled to see huge icicles growing out of the fountain (above).

The fountain at DTS had not escaped either.....(below)...

My prayer is that this freezing start to 2010 is not reflective of how the year will progress spiritually in our lives and in our churches.

Let's pray that we will not have hearts that are frozen and unmoving, but that our lives will demonstrate the spring of water that is found within every Christian.....a spring welling up into eternal life [John 4:13-14]

A call for quiet

Have you made any New Year's resolutions?

Have you kept any so far?

I've been really struck by this passage of Ecclesiastes:

"Guard your steps when you go to the house of God. Go near to listen rather than to offer the sacrifice of fools, who do not know that they do wrong. Do not be quick with your mouth, do not be hasty in your heart to utter anything before God. God is in heaven and you are on earth, so let your words be few."
5:1-2

I challenge you to listen more than you say this year.....especially in your relationship with the Lord.

Rather than bring God a daily list of things you'd 'like,' why not spend time in silence, just listening for that still, quiet word from Him.

One thing I know for sure......God wants to speak to us, and He wants us to be ready and listening. After all, God is in heaven, and we are on earth, so let our words be few.....and our listening be much!

Well, here it is! Another year.........2010!

What will it bring, and what is in store for you this year? In other words, where is your road heading in 2010?

As for us......we're asking the Lord to reveal His plan for our family. With just 3 full semesters to go, it won't be long before our time at DTS is up! We're therefore wondering where God's road for us in 2010 will be heading.....

At the start of a new year I'm reminded of those words we read at the start of the Bible.....

"In the beginning God......"

The beginning of 2010 is an ideal time for us all to check our focus and priorities for the coming year. Let's remember that not only is He in control, but He has prepared a road for each one of us......something He prepared before time itself began.

The question is......how willing are we to submit our plans to His?

Whose road are you willing to walk down at the start of 2010......yours......or God's?

who are you tracking?

For the past few years on Christmas Even, we've enjoyed logging onto NORAD's track santa website with the children (click HERE) and following Santa's progress as he journeys across the world delivering gifts! The children know it's not real (ooops - sorry if I let the cat out of the bag for you on that one.......), but it's some light hearted fun all the same.

All over the world on December 24th, children wait in 'expectation' to see what Santa will bring this year.

As Christians, I wonder how much effort we put into 'tracking Jesus?' In other words, how much time and energy do we invest in preparing for when Jesus will return for His church? It could happen at any moment on any day.

What if it happened this Christmas? Are you prepared to meet the Savior of the world?

I saw this sign today.

It reminded me of a video I saw recently in which children were being asked what Christmas meant to them. One of them said it was a time when we remembered Jesus' mother....."Mary Christmas....!"

On the one hand, it's funny......but on the other hand......it's deadly serious.

What has the 21st Century done to Christmas? Let me remind you what Christmas is NOT:

Christmas is NOT all about Santa and gifts. When we make it about the presents, we miss the presence of Christ.....

Santa didn't come into the world to die for our sins.......Jesus did! Only He could restore us to our Father in heaven.

Christmas is not about how much money can we shoe-horn under our trees for December 25th....

And I couldn't find reference to this anywhere in my Bible....

Bottom line = presents are all fine, and it's perfectly OK to celebrate with family and friends, but PLEASE remember....Martin and Fiona

Reflecting Christ at Christmas

I really like this image, because it helps to encapsulate what Christmas really means.

Christmas is all about Easter. Jesus was born to die. It's as simple as that. The reason the God the Son became man was that He might die for our sins and rise from the dead - bringing us true peace with God.

We've had some neat moments recently when we've seen Christ reflected in our Christmas preparations, celebrations and activities.

Let me ask you.......what will you do this Christmas to reflect Christ?

End of semster exams

This week I have my end of semester exams.

I just had a few papers to turn in.....

.....which meant staying up a little later than normal.....

....but overall I think I handled it all very well....

Oh well, they are all over now, and there's time to sit back and relax. After all......it's not like I'm about to jump on an airplane and fly half way around the world......

That's impossible!

Take a look at this picture. It contains several impossibilities.

Interesting, eh?

I sometimes look at events in my life and think 'how can I ever do this? It's impossible!'

I was reminded today however, that often it is in those areas that I think simply cannot be resolved or dealt with, that God steps in and shows me just how great He is!

Think about the birth narrative in Luke. In chapter 1, we find two of the first Christmas miracles:

1. Elizabeth conceived a baby (Luke 1:5-25). This is the same Elizabeth who was well on in her age (probably in her late 80s) and had been sterile her entire life - unable to have a baby. Suddenly God stepped in and allowed her to conceive.

2. Then we have Mary (Luke 1:26-38). She was young (possibly 12-14 years of age), a virgin, and yet she conceived through the Holy Spirit - and not just 'any old baby,' but God the Son!

Two miracles. Two events that mankind could NEVER have done.

And then we have the wonderful verse.....(Luke 1:37)....

We would do well to remember the context of that verse : God DOING the impossible.

In the same way He has worked through the history of the world doing the impossible, this Christmastime, He is able to meet our every need.....IF we will trust Him.

You see, with God....NOTHING is impossible.

Our response should be just like that of Mary...

I am the Lord's servant. May it be to me just as [God] has said.
